Save The Barrier Reef!

Collective Artistic Project

The Great Barrier Reef, located west of the Queensland shores in Australia, is one of the main marvels that Nature, and particularly the oceans, have given to the world. It is a reservoir of biodiversity with no equivalent, hosting more than 350 coral species of various shapes, colors and sizes, and thousands of fish species.

But this ecosystem is fragile and endangered, as it suffers multiple attacks: global warming, pollution, agricultural and industrial activities on the coast, high touristic pressure…

In order to celebrate the Great Barrier Reef, and to shed light on the absolute necessity to protect it, three contemporary artists will gather in Paris and create a common artwork: Save The Barrier Reef.

–   Scott Riddle, American clay sculptor who works with porcelain on light and complex structures, leaving a large place to the animal world, to the symbols of its native American ancestors, and to nature in general.

– Maryse Maillard-Felix, glassmaker in Charleville-Mézières, who plays with glass in endless variations of colors, textures and shapes.

– Laetitia Ambroselli, mosaic artist in Paris, whose work aims at reconciling the mineral elements of stones and glass tesserae  with fluidity, light and movement.

« We have known one each other for a long time and despite our different techniques, our works often converge around the themes of Nature, animal and vegetal worlds, but also light and fluidity, as shown for example in Laetitia’s jellyfishes, Riddle’s butterflies and insects, Maryse’s frogs and leaves.”

« Our collective artwork fulfills our wish to go further from our past collaborations. This time, we want to create together, integrate our artistic approaches around a theme which is central to us: the beauty of Nature and the importance of protecting it. »

The artists will create together a « Coral Planet » : on the basis of a 1m-diameter metal sphere, we will place all kinds of plants and animals of the Great Barrier Reef, until they cover entirely the sphere: corals, algae, anemones, fishes… The marriage of porcelain, glass and mosaics will allow variation in light thanks to a slow rotation of the sphere on itself. Colorful jellyfishes will be floating around the coral sphere.

The art work will then be shown to the public in an open exhibition. a book will also be made to leave a track of this collective artistic adventure .

More widely, « Save The Barrier Reef » aims at including other artists to integrate their own contributions, and to foster exchanges with the public to celebrate the nature and the power of cooperation.
